Step 1: Clear Grinder

Idea
Tech Tip! Large grind adjustments should be made without coffee actively contained within the burr chamber. This reduces the risk of jams and adjustment issues.
  1. Prior to grind adjustment.
  2. Close the hopper locking slide.

  1. Empty dose chamber.
  2. Grind out remaining coffee retained in burr chamber.

Step 2: Adjust Grind Setting
  1. Loosen disk locking pin.
    1. In some cases, pin may not be present.

  1. Rotate coffee adjustment disk arm in the desired direction:
    1. Course = Clockwise
    2. Fine = Counterclockwise

When adjusting the grind setting, keep the following principles outlined in the Espresso Shot Troubleshooting guide in mind:
  1. Rotating the adjustment disk clockwise coarsens the grind particle size and effectively decreases the shot time.
  2. Counter-clockwise produces finer grounds resulting in increased shot times.

Step 2.5: Indicator Marks & Locking Pin
  1. Use the numbers and corresponding indicator marks present on the adjustment collar as guides (more information below).

  1. If necessary, remove the locking pin for further adjustments.
    1. Removing the locking pin allows adjustment collar to rotate 360°.

Info
*Numbers and adjustment indicator marks vary from grinder to grinder. It is important to note these indicators are not quantifiable reference points. (Example a '9' on one grinder may not produce the same grind result as a '9' on another grinder. Even if they are the same model!) This is especially true after Burr Replacement and servicing.

In general, think of indicator numbers as: Higher numbers = courser grind. Smaller numbers = finer grind. It is best to understand how to achieve the desired Espresso Shot than to focus on 'X number on a grinder results in Y espresso shot.'

It is also possible to rotate the adjustment disk 360° in either direction in an attempt to achieve the desired grind setting by removing the locking pin (above image). This is particularly common after replacing burr sets.

Step 3: Verify Dose & Shot Time

Once new grind setting has been set. Two pulls of the doser lever is ~14g of coffee into the portafilter.
  1. Open hopper locking slide and grind coffee into doser chamber.
    1. Do not fill doser chamber at this time!
  2. Using doser lever, dispense and discard a couple shots worth of ground coffee.
  3. On the third dispensed dose...
  4. Tamp and pull a shot.
    1. Repeat an additional time.
  5. Do the extracted coffee shots achieve the desired time?
