Unexpected Shut Off - Linea PB

Unexpected Shut Off - Linea PB

Excessive liquid accumulation, accidental spills, or inadequate venting will cause moisture build up within the espresso machine leading to electrical shorts.... particularly at the AC terminal block. This troubleshooting article will guide you through several symptoms, causes, and solutions to get the machine back up and running!

Symptom:
  1. Espresso machine is OFF.
Causes:
Pooling water, syrups, or other various liquids, either dripping on or evaporating through, the power terminal can cause the espresso machine to shut off.
  1. Syrups or various containers dripping residual liquid into the cup tray.
  2. Accidental spills on upper panel or cup tray.
  3. Button Fault or Short
    1. Affects DC circuit.
  4. Soaked towels or rubber mats placed on top of espresso machine.
    1. Prevents venting.
Info
Most commonly, liquids and excessive moisture collects on the upper (top) panels where, if allowed to accumulate, will eventually flood the cup tray liner. Once this occurs, liquid will travel along the subframe body and may drip down onto electrical components. The illustrations and images below detail resolution measures for this scenario. To avoid reoccurring electrical faults, visit the Equipment Best Use Practices guide.

Solution:
  1. Visually inspect machine for any leaks or drips.
  2. Clean and dry internal areas where water or liquid has accumulated.
    1. Drip & Cup Tray Cleaning
  3. Flip Breaker Switch.
  4. Review Equipment Best Use Practices.
Tools:
  1. Philips Head Screwdriver
  2. Dry Towels

Step 1: Unpower & Access Espresso Machine
  1. Turn power switch to the OFF position.
    1. Zero position is OFF.

Info
Newer Linea PB's utilize a two stage power switch. In either case, 0 is always OFF.
  1. To learn more, visit the Power Switch - Linea PB Guide.
  1. Unplug espresso machine power cord from wall outlet.
    1. Espresso machine is plugged into the one and only large 6-50 outlet underneath the counter.

Alert
Prior to removing panels... Lift grated cup tray panel(s) and look for pooling liquid on the cup tray liner.
  1. Yellow rectangle in image below illustrates common collection points!
  2. If any liquid is present:
    1. Soak up with a dry towel.

  1. Begin removing panels:
    1. Front upper panel, followed by the cup, and drip trays.

  1. At this time, it is recommended to clean each panel.
    1. Drip & Cup Tray Cleaning

Idea
Tech Tip! Panels should be regularly cleaned as part of Routine Cleaning Procedures & Care.

Step 2: Inspect For Moisture & Clean Affected Areas
Warning
Do not proceed with Step 2 unless machine is unplugged from wall outlet!
  1. At this point, lets investigate common areas where liquid collects.
    1. The yellow rectangle in the next three images highlights areas commonly associated with cup tray leaks leading to electrical shorts.

  1. With a dry towel:
    1. Clean all areas if liquid is present.
    2. Use a damp towel to clean sticky and stubborn grime from metal panel edges.

Idea
Tech Tip! With a dry towel, ensure as much visible liquid is cleaned from the terminal block (white arrows) and high limit switches (yellow arrows)! Use care when wiping down high limit switches and terminal block.

Step 3: Power On Machine
  1. Once all visible liquid accumulation has been dried... leave cup tray panel OFF and:
    1. Plug espresso machine power cord back into wall outlet and flip breaker switch.
AlertIt is recommended to switch breaker fully OFF and then back ON to ensure breaker is activated.

Info
Each espresso machine has a breaker switch associated with it. Locate corresponding switch on breaker panel:
  1. For more information, visit the Breaker Panel Guide.
  1. Turn espresso machine power switch ON.

  1. If machine begins to heat as normal, great!
  2. If machine shuts off, breaker immediately trips, or does not turn on at all...
    1. It may be necessary to allow residual moisture to evaporate and dry out.
    2. Leave espresso machine and cup tray OFF and try again in 12hrs.
